Like others at FP who shall go unnamed, I can't resist having some fun at Vice President Joe Biden's expense when he does something silly like say something that's true but terribly stupid to say in public.

In the interest of fairness, therefore, let's take a look at how a Biden trip in which he's the diplomatic guy in room -- his sojourn to Israel.  True, Biden hasn't been shy about opening his mouth -- although this qualifies more as "tough-minded diplomacy" rather than gaffe.

As for the Israelis.... well, let's take a look at Barak Ravid's Ha'aretz report, shall we?

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Jerusalem yesterday was not free of embarrassing moments.

The first occurred at the President's Residence, at the start of a meeting between Biden and President Shimon Peres. The plan called for brief remarks, which usually means a few minutes. But Peres spoke for no less than 25 minutes.

Throughout the speech, the vice president sat in his chair waiting for his turn to say something. American reporters and others present at the scene said the whole thing was very embarrassing, because, as one put it, Peres "gave a whole speech, going from one subject to another."

Many of those present were shifting uncomfortably in their chairs, the sources said, while Peres' aides exchanged worried looks and passed notes to each other.

In the end, his aides whispered to Peres that time was short, and he should hand the floor over to Biden - who did confine his remarks to a few minutes. The two then held their meeting, accompanied by their aides.

Seriously, what is going on over there?  This is hardly the first diplomatic screw-up they've had in 2010.  Most of this stuff is on the order of ticky-tack fouls, but it does add up

UPDATE:  Well, it's good to know the Israelis aren't the only ones making gaffes

Elephant in the room

Drezner's critique of Israeli politicians is about an impromptu speech made by an ancient pol named Shimon Peres?

Sorry Dan, the big news in Israel today was their announcement of the building of 1600 new houses on Palestinian land in East Jerusalem. Netanyahu and his gang just kicked our President and VP in the balls.

There will be no repercussions from Obama and Biden except a verbal slap on the wrist.

Why? Walt and Mearsheimer wrote a book about it.

lame response

The previous poster's comment was spot on. If you're going to criticize Israeli diplomacy (and policy!), which you should, talk about something more substantive than an over-length speech. An unexplained link is a lame CYA measure, at best.

As an IR grad student, I enjoy most of your usual commentary--especially your willingness to write with a little flair, which most IR scholars seem to completely lack. However, it appears that you either have a blind-spot when it comes to the nature of our (America's) relationship with Israel, or that you simply cannot publicly admit that Mearsheimer and Walt are essentially right.

I'd be happy to be wrong. But where's the contrary evidence?

Fair enough

Max P:  I've blogged/written a fair amount on the Israel Lobby, and really don't want to regurgitate it yet again.  I think my latest take (which you may or may not find convincing) was here:  http://www.danieldrezner.com/archives/003716.html

Yeah Dan

I really wanted to read one more opinion on the Israel-Biden spat and I feel empty not having yours. I'm sure you would have supplied that critical nugget that the other 7,000 analysts, bloggers and op-ed writers missed.

Shame on you for posting something different and interesting rather than following the herd.

who knows. peres plays the

who knows. peres plays the part of doddering old idiot more and more because he has no power anymore. he is used to imparting little doses of peace process wisdom on his visitors, but doesn't realize how redundant and feckless he sounds when he has absolutely no power. beyond that, netanyahu doesn't give a damn about the administration. it should come as no surprise to us that this prime minister is engaging in coalition politics. beyond those narrow calculations, it is doubtful whether bibi would take a peace deal even without anybody watching him. as it is, he's waiting the administration out. He appears to have succeeded. Biden was unfortunately embarrassed (and even Bibi wouldn't relish in that), but it was justified by the ends: axing the hopeless talks and draining the americans of any last ounce of resolve. Surely Obama has put this problem on the shelf now. How much more demonstration would he need that the US is more interested than the parties themselves? even though such inattentiveness will foster a third intifadah, and Netanyahu is aware of such a danger, he continues to allow coalition partners to determine his moves. he is patently NOT a reliable "partner for peace," yet for some reason this doesn't require us to surround his house with tanks and restrict his movements (a la the peace prize winning arafat).

What I find so interesting is

What I find so interesting is how AIPAC and the ADL seem to think Biden is to blame for being slapped in the face by the Israeli govt?!? Netanyahu's advisers are going around telling the Israeli media that they think this ongoing controversy has been "orchestrated" (like a conspiracy?) by the U.S. administration. As if it has *nothing* to do with anything they did. And its not like this is the first time the Israeli govt has gone out of its way to make a US official look like an idiot.

Would it really kill AIPAC to just once not have a knee-jerk, tediously predictable response to something like this?

Well, I guess this will make the upcoming AIPAC conference a tad more interesting given Bibi will be there and Hillary Clinton will be speaking...
